Motivational Speech: Penn’s 2011 Commencement Address by Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington, internationally renowned actor and director, delivered the address at the University of Pennsylvania’s 255th Commencement on Monday, May 16. Washington is one of the nation’s preeminent performing artists, having achieved wide acclaim for his film, theatrical and television performances, as well as his accomplishments in film directing and television production. Washington has received the most distinguished accolades of his art, including two Academy Awards and a Tony Award. At Commencement, Washington received an honorary doctor of arts degree.

Denzel Washington highlighted three reasons why we need to embrace failure in order to be successful. First, everybody will fail at something at some point, so you better get used to it. Second, if you never fail, take that as a sign that you’re not really trying. And third, at the end of the day, failure will help you figure out what path you want to be on.

thank you thank you very much
0:16
I am obviously the most unorganized
0:18
everybody else has nice boxes bring
0:21
their script up in and I just like kind
0:24
of got it all my stuff here we put it
0:27
inside of a magazine so so in fact I
0:31
don’t even have it in the right order
0:33
wait a minute let me get in the right
0:34
order here so if it starts like flying
0:38
around the stage just you know run
0:41
around and grab it for me and bring it
0:42
back up here for me I’ll keep going as I
0:46
can
0:49
president Gutmann Provost price board
0:55
chair cohen fellow honorees beautiful
0:59
honorees and today’s graduates um I’m
1:09
honored and grateful for the invitation
1:12
today I’m it’s always been great to be
1:15
on the Penn campus I’ve been here before
1:18
a lot of times for basketball games my
1:21
son played at the Palestra played on the
1:23
basketball team I yeah that’s right
1:26
played on the basketball team coach
1:30
didn’t give me enough playing time we’ll
1:32
talk about that later
1:35
no I’m really are I really pleased with
1:39
the progress that Coach Allen has made
1:41
and no I do I am I really am and I hope
1:46
I’m the best success in the future and
1:48
you know I always get a warm welcome
1:51
when I come to Pennsylvania when I come
1:53
to Philadelphia except on the few
1:57
occasions where I wear my Yankee cap
2:05
what’s wrong with that III can’t
2:08
suddenly just switch up and wear a
2:09
Philly cap I mean and I mean it’s like
2:11
taking your life in your hands around
2:13
here when you were a Yankee cap I’m
2:14
telling you I met a couple of guys and
2:17
they were like hey we love you Denzel
2:18
but you know you’re walking around with
2:21
that hat on we don’t care who you are so
2:24
you be happy to see that I’m not wearing
2:27
my Yankee cap today I’m wearing my
2:31
Yankee socks my Yankee t-shirt my Yankee
2:33
jock shorts and yaki underwear my Yankee
2:36
toe warmers but it’s not my Yankee cap
2:41
but still I’ll be honest with you I’m
2:44
I’m a little nervous I’m not used to
2:47
speaking at a graduation of this
2:48
magnitude it’s a little overwhelming
2:51
it’s out of my comfort zone
2:53
now you dressed me up in army fatigues
2:55
or throwing me on top of a moving train
2:59
someone said unstoppable or asked me to
3:01
play mile for max Rubin hurricane Carter
3:03
or Alonzo from training day I can do
3:06
that but the commencement speech it’s
3:09
it’s very serious affair and it’s a very
3:12
different ballgame there are literally
3:15
thousands and thousands of people here
3:17
and for those who say well you’re a
3:21
movie star millions of people watch you
3:22
and watch you speak all the time well
3:24
that’s – that that’s a trek technically
3:26
true but I’m not actually in the theater
3:30
watching them watching me
3:34
I think that makes sense I mean I’m not
3:37
there when they call for a fidget around
3:38
or pull out their iPhones or tech boy
3:41
friend or scratch their behinds or
3:43
whatever it is they’re doing in the
3:44
movie theater but from up here I can see
3:49
every single one of you and that makes
3:53
me uncomfortable so please don’t pull
3:57
out your iPhone’s and your text don’t
4:00
text your boyfriend until after I’m done
4:02
please if you have to scratch it behind
4:06
I mean I understand go ahead I was
4:10
thinking about this speech what I should
4:12
say I figured the best way to keep your
4:15
attention would be to talk about
4:16
something you know really like juicy
4:19
Hollywood stuff like I thought I could
4:21
talk about me and Russell Crowe getting
4:25
in arguments on a set of American
4:27
Gangster or but I said now now now
4:30
you’re a group of high-minded
4:32
intellectuals you’re not interested in
4:33
that
4:34
yeah oh maybe not I thought about a
4:40
private moment I had backstage with
4:43
Angelina Jolie in a dressing room after
4:46
the Oscars but I said no I don’t think
4:49
so this is an Ivy League school and I
4:51
mean Angelina Jolie half naked in a
4:55
dressing room who wants to hear about
4:56
that no one no one no one no one this is
5:01
Penn that stuff would never go over well
5:03
over here maybe a Drexel but not over
5:16
whoever in trouble now so I was back to
5:21
square one feeling the pressure so now
5:27
you’re probably thinking if it was going
5:29
to be this difficult this is what’s
5:30
pressure why did I even accept today’s
5:33
invitation in the first place well you
5:36
know my son goes here that’s number one
5:38
that’s a good reason and I always like
5:41
to check to see how my money is being
5:43
spent and I’m sure there’s some parents
5:46
out there who can relate to what I’m
5:48
talking about yeah hmm everybody
5:53
upstairs and there were some other good
5:56
reasons for me to show up sure I got an
5:59
Academy Award but I never had something
6:01
called a magic meatball
6:03
after waiting in line for half an hour
6:05
at the pool truck yeah yes I talk face
6:10
to face with President Obama but I never
6:13
talked face to face with a guy named
6:15
tweeter who sings bad songs over it
6:19
smokes on Tuesday night I never been to
6:22
bouys I never been the demos yes I have
6:28
played a detective who battles demons
6:30
but I’ve never been to a school in my
6:32
life where the squirrel population has
6:34
gone bananas I mean they’re breaking in
6:38
the dorm rooms they’re walking around
6:40
campus I think I saw some carrying books
6:42
on their way to class
6:47
so I had to be here I had to come even
6:52
though I was afraid I might make a fool
6:54
of myself in fact if you really want to
6:57
know the truth
6:58
I had to come exactly because I had to
7:01
come exactly because I might make a fool
7:03
of myself now what am I talking about
7:06
here it is I found that nothing in life
7:11
is worthwhile unless you take risks
7:15
nothing Nelson Mandela said there is no
7:20
passion to be found playing small and
7:23
settling for a life that’s less than the
7:26
one you’re capable of living now I’m
7:29
sure in your experiences in school and
7:31
applying to college and picking your
7:33
major and deciding what you want to do
7:34
with life I’m sure people that told you
7:37
to make sure you have something to fall
7:38
back on make sure you got something to
7:40
fall back on honey but I never
7:43
understood that concept having something
7:46
to fall back on
7:47
if I’m going to fall I don’t want to
7:51
fall back on anything except my faith I
7:55
want to fall forward I figure at least
7:59
this way I’ll see what I’m going to hit
8:03
fall forward this is what I mean
8:08
Reggie Jackson struck out 26 hundred
8:11
times in his career the most in the
8:13
history of baseball but you don’t hear
8:15
about the strikeouts people remember the
8:17
homeruns fall forward
8:22
thomas edison conducted 1,000 failed
8:25
experiments did you know that i didn’t
8:26
know that because the 1,000 and first
8:30
was the light bulb fall forward every
8:36
failed experiment is one step closer to
8:39
success you’ve got to take risks and i’m
8:41
sure you probably heard that before but
8:43
i want to talk to you about why that’s
8:45
important I got three reasons and then
8:49
you can pick up your iPhone’s first you
8:55
will fail at some point in your life
8:57
accept it you will lose you will
9:00
embarrass yourself you will suck at
9:02
something there’s no doubt about it and
9:05
I know that’s probably not a traditional
9:07
message for a graduation ceremony today
9:09
I’m telling you embrace it
9:11
because it’s inevitable and I should
9:14
know in the acting business you fail all
9:18
the time early on in my career I
9:20
auditioned for a part in a Broadway
9:22
musical perfect role for me I thought
9:25
except for the fact that I can’t sing so
9:30
I’m in the wings I’m about to go onstage
9:33
but the guy in front of me he’s singing
9:35
like like like Pavarotti he’s just no
9:40
longer he’s just going on and on and on
9:43
and I’m just shrinking I’m getting
9:45
smaller and smaller so they say oh thank
9:48
you very much thank you very much and
9:50
you will you’ll be hearing from us so I
9:52
come out with my little sheet music and
9:54
it was it was a just my imagination by
9:59
the temptations that’s what I came up
10:00
with so I hand it to the the accompanies
10:04
and she looks at it and looks at me and
10:06
excited the director
10:08
was like all right so I start you know
10:13
like I’m gonna sing I’m once again again
10:23
carrying away with me and they’re not
10:25
saying anything so I’m thinking I’m
10:27
getting better I start to start getting
10:29
into it
10:33
running this out of you thank you thank
10:36
you thank you thank you very much mr.
10:38
Washington thank you so I assumed I
10:41
didn’t get the job but the next part of
10:45
the audition he called me back the next
10:46
part of the audition is the acting part
10:49
of the audition so I’m like hey okay
10:51
maybe I can’t sing but I know I can act
10:53
so they pair me with this guy and again
10:56
I didn’t know about musical theater in
10:57
musical theater is big so they can reach
11:00
everyone all the way in the back of the
11:02
stadium and I’m more from a realistic
11:06
naturalistic kind of acting where you
11:08
you know you actually talk to the person
11:10
next to you so I don’t know what my line
11:13
was my line was will hand me the cut and
11:16
his line was well I will hand you the
11:18
cup my dear the cup would be there to be
11:21
handed to you I said okay
11:30
well should I give you the cup back oh
11:33
yes you should give it back to me
11:35
because you know that is my cup and it
11:37
should be given back to me I didn’t get
11:43
the job but here’s the thing I didn’t
11:51
quit I didn’t fall back I walked out it
11:57
it to prepare for the next audition and
11:59
the next audition and the next audition
12:01
I prayed I prayed and I prayed
12:09
but I continue to fail and fail and fail
12:13
but it didn’t matter because you know
12:15
what is an old saying you hang around
12:18
the barbershop long enough sooner or
12:20
later you’re going to get a haircut so
12:24
you will catch a break and I did catch a
12:26
break last year I did a play called
12:31
fences on Broadway someone talked about
12:35
it won the Tony Award and I didn’t have
12:41
to sing by the way but here’s the kicker
12:45
he was at the Court Theatre he was at
12:49
the same theatre that I failed that
12:51
first audition 30 years prior the the
12:59
point is and I’ll pick up the pace the
13:02
point is every graduate here today has
13:05
the training and the talent to succeed
13:07
but do you have the guts to fail here’s
13:12
my second point about failure if you
13:13
don’t fail you’re not even trying
13:18
I’ll say it again if you don’t fail
13:21
you’re not even trying my wife told me
13:23
this great expression to get something
13:25
you never had you have to do something
13:28
you never did Les Brown’s a motivational
13:32
speaker you made an analogy about this
13:33
he says imagine you’re on your deathbed
13:35
and standing around your deathbed are
13:38
the ghosts representing your unfulfilled
13:40
potential the ghost of the ideas you
13:43
never acted on the ghosts of the talents
13:46
you didn’t use and they’re standing
13:48
around your bed angry disappointed and
13:51
upset they say we came to you because
13:55
you could have brought us to life they
13:57
say and now we have to go to the grave
14:00
together so I ask you today how many
14:04
ghosts are going to be around your bed
14:06
when your time comes
14:08
you go west you’ve invested a lot in
14:11
your education and people have invested
14:12
in you and let me tell you the world
14:14
needs your talents and does it ever I
14:16
just got back from Africa like two days
14:19
ago so if I’m rambling on it’s cuz I’m
14:21
jet lag I just got back from South
14:23
Africa it’s a beautiful country but
14:25
there are places there with terrible
14:27
part of it poverty that need help in
14:29
Africa is just the tip of the iceberg
14:31
the Middle East needs your help
14:33
Japan needs your help Alabama needs your
14:36
help Tennessee needs your help
14:37
Louisiana needs your help Philadelphia
14:40
needs your help the world the world
14:50
needs a lot and we need it from you we
14:53
really do we need it from you young
14:55
people I mean I’m not speaking for the
14:56
rest of us up here but I know I’m
14:58
getting a little grayer we need it from
15:01
you the young people because remember
15:02
this so you got to get out there you got
15:05
to give it everything you got
15:07
whether it’s your time your your your
15:10
talent your prayers or your treasures
15:14
because remember this you will never see
15:18
a u-haul behind a hearse
15:25
I’ll say it again you will never see a
15:30
u-haul behind a hearse you can’t take it
15:35
with you
15:36
the Egyptians tried it and all they got
15:40
was robbed so the question is what are
15:48
you going to do with what you have I’m
15:50
not talking about how much you have some
15:53
of you are business majors some of you
15:54
are theologians nurses sociologists some
15:57
of you have money some of you have
15:59
patients some of you have kindness some
16:01
of you have loved some of you have the
16:03
gift of long-suffering whatever it is
16:06
whatever your gift is what are you going
16:08
to do with what you have all right now
16:13
here’s my last point about failure
16:15
sometimes it’s the best way to figure
16:19
out where you’re going your life will
16:22
never be a straight path I began at
16:25
Fordham University as a pre-med student
16:26
I took a course called the cardiac
16:31
morphus I still can’t say it cardiac
16:35
cardiac morphogenesis I couldn’t read it
16:37
I couldn’t say it I sure couldn’t pass
16:39
it so then I decided to go into pre-law
16:45
then journalism and with no academic
16:47
focus my grades took off in their own
16:49
direction
16:53
yeah down I was a 1.8 GPA one semester
16:59
and the University very politely
17:01
suggested that it might be better to
17:03
take some time off I was twenty years
17:06
old
17:07
I was at my lowest point and then one
17:10
day and I remember the exact day March
17:12
27 1975 I was helping my mother in her
17:16
beauty shop my mother owned the beauty
17:17
shop up in my Vernon and there’s there
17:19
was this older woman who was considered
17:22
one of the elders in the town and I
17:24
didn’t know her personally but I was
17:26
looking in the mirror and every time I
17:27
looked at the mirror I could see her
17:28
behind me and she was staring at me she
17:32
just kept looking at me every time I
17:33
looked at it she kept giving me these
17:34
strange looks so she finally took the
17:37
dryer off her head and sets the sump she
17:39
said something I’ll never forget
17:40
first of all she said somebody give me a
17:42
piece of paper give me a piece of paper
17:44
she said young boy I have a prophecy a
17:48
spiritual prophecy she said you are
17:52
going to travel the world and speak to
17:56
millions of people now mind you I’m 20
17:58
years old I’m flunked out of school in
18:00
fact like a wiseass I’m thinking to
18:02
myself maybe she’s got something in that
18:04
crystal ball about me getting back at
18:05
the school next fall but maybe she was
18:10
onto something because later that summer
18:12
while working as a counselor to YMCA
18:14
camp in Connecticut we put on a talent
18:16
show for the campers and after the show
18:18
another counselor came up to me and
18:20
asked have you ever thought about acting
18:21
you’re good at that so when I got back
18:24
to Fordham that fall I got in and I
18:26
changed my major once again for the last
18:28
time and in the years that followed just
18:31
as that woman prophesized I have
18:33
traveled the world and I have spoken to
18:35
millions of people through my movies
18:38
millions who up till this day couldn’t
18:41
see me up till this day I couldn’t see
18:44
while I was talking to them and they
18:46
couldn’t see me they could only see the
18:48
movie they couldn’t see the real me
18:52
but I see you today
18:55
and I’m encouraged by what I see and I’m
19:01
strengthened by what I see and I love
19:06
what I see
19:19
one more page now shut up let me
19:25
conclude with this one final point
19:26
actually the president kind of brought
19:28
it up has to do with the movie
19:29
Philadelphia
19:30
she stole my material many years ago I
19:35
did this movie called Philadelphia we
19:38
filmed some of the scenes right here on
19:40
campus Philadelphia came out in 1993
19:43
most of you were probably still in
19:45
diapers some of the professors too but I
19:51
cracked me up but it was a good movie
19:55
ran it on what he called it Netflix it’s
19:57
good movie renting I get 23 cents every
20:00
time you rent it please true parents up
20:03
their rent rent rented netflix please
20:07
tell your friends too it’s about a man
20:09
played by Tom Hanks who’s fired from his
20:11
law firm because he has AIDS he wants to
20:14
sue the firm but no one’s willing to
20:15
represent him until the homophobic
20:17
ambulance chaser lawyer played by yours
20:20
truly takes on the case in a way if you
20:23
watched the movie you’ll see everything
20:25
I’m talking about today you’ll see what
20:27
I mean about taking risk or being
20:29
willing to fail because taking risk is
20:32
not just about going for a job it’s also
20:36
about knowing what you know and what you
20:38
don’t know it’s about being open to
20:41
people and to ideas in the course of the
20:46
film the character I play begins to take
20:48
small steps small risks he’s very very
20:54
very slowly begins to overcome his fears
21:00
and I feel ultimately his heart becomes
21:03
flooded with love and I can’t think of a
21:07
better message as we send you off today
21:09
to not only take risks but to be open to
21:14
life to accept new views and to be open
21:17
to new opinions to be willing to speak
21:20
at a commencement at one of the best
21:22
country vesica universities in the
21:24
country even though you’re scared stiff
21:26
while it may be frightening it will also
21:28
be rewarding because the chances you
21:32
take the people you meet the people you
21:35
love the faith that you have that’s
21:39
what’s going to define you so members of
21:43
the class of 2011 this is your mission
21:45
when you leave the friendly confines of
21:48
Philly never be discouraged never hold
21:52
back give everything you got and when
21:57
you fall throughout life and maybe even
22:00
tonight after a few many glasses of
22:02
champagne
22:05
remember this fall forward
22:10
congratulations I love you god bless you
22:13
I respect you
22:34
you
